Davies gets maximum of 48 years
An El Paso County district court judge has sentenced
19-year-old Matthew Davies to the maximum of 48 years in prison
for 2nd Degree Murder. Davies pleaded guilty to the charge last
September, and admitted to killing 20-year-old Dustin
Cisneros in May 2006. Cisneros' body was found in a burning pickup.

Shooting suspect sought
Springs Police are asking for the public's help in locating a suspect
wanted in connection with last weekend's shooting outside
the Alumni Bar at Pikes Peak and Academy. Police
tell KZNT the shooting left 27-year-old Elriko Hamlet
hospitalized. Police obtained an arrest warrant for
28-year-old Droderick Lewis.

Food recall expanded due to potential botulism
State health officials say a Michigan canning company has expanded
a recall to now include all green beans and garbanzo beans in
#10 size cans. Those cans, along with numerous other products
of the New Era Canning Company, may be contaminated with
the bacterium that can lead to botulism.

Tulo signs lucrative multi-year deal with Rockies
It became official Wednesday. Troy Tulowitzki signed a whopper
of a deal that will keep the shortstop sensation with the Colorado
Rockies for several more years. Tulo agreed to a 6-year deal
worth over $30 million, and it includes a club option for a 7th year.

Fountain man accused of impersonating officer
A Fountain man who was attending classes in criminal justice at Pueblo
Community College, has been arrested on suspicion of Impersonating
a Peace Officer. Sgt. Jess Freeman told KZNT that 19-year-old Theara
Brye allegedly was pulling over motorists, and using red and blue police
lights to speed to various destinations.

Two arrested in Fountain home invasion
Fountain Police have arrested two suspects in connection with
the home invasion and burglary on Fountain Mesa Road
late Sunday night.
Both suspects were jailed after being released from the hospital.
They were treated for non life-threatening gunshot wounds received
when the home's occupant shot at them, according to police.
Sgt. Jess Freeman told KZNT the suspects are 27-year-old Jorge
Elugardo and 23-year-old Brian Kennedy.

Tim Masters freed after murder conviction and sentence are vacated
Tim Masters' long fight for freedom is over after almost
10 years behind bars.
The 36-year-old Fort Collins man was set free late Tuesday
morning by a judge in Larimer County who vacated Masters' murder
conviction and sentence for the 1987 homicide of Peggy Hettrick.
He was freed on $200,000 bond, pending a February 5th hearing.

Springs police ask for arrest of former Jeffco sheriff
Colorado Springs police say the former sheriff of Jefferson County
was arrested at his home in Arvada on Monday.
Sgt. Mark Stevens told KZNT 58-year-old Russell Cook allegedly
violated a restraining order in Colorado Springs, where his
former girlfriend lives.

A husband and wife were looking for someplace to live Sunday night
after fire caused extensive damage to their mobile home. But there
were no injuries. It happened at the Holiday Village Mobile Home
Park on Sinton Road.

Springs woman dies in crash on icy roads
The Colorado State Patrol says icy roads may have contributed to
several crashes Friday night and Saturday, some of them fatal.
The State Patrol said a single vehicle accident just south
of the World Arena Friday night claimed the life of 59-year-old
Edith Hinkle of Colorado Springs.

Major fire shuts down Grand Junction TV station
Fire officials in Grand Junction say a TV station was destroyed
by fire Sunday morning. There were no injuries, but damage was
estimated at about $6 million. The blaze forced KREX off the air.

Mother and boyfriend now face murder charges
The El Paso County Coroner has determined that 4-year-old Madyson
Bogard died from a head injury as the result of blunt force trauma.
The girl's death has now been ruled a homicide. The
charges against the suspects have been amended to First Degree
Murder. The victim's mother, 23-year-old Chrystie Hardy, and her
boyfriend, 25-year-old Mark Friend, are now being held without bond.

An investigative panel has recommended that State Representative
Doug Bruce be censured for the much-publicized kicking incident
against a newspaper photographer on Monday.

Girl dies after alleged abuse
The 4-year-old girl who had been hospitalized with severe
injuries since Tuesday, died shortly after 9:30 Wednesday
night. Springs Police told KZNT that Madyson Bogard
was beaten repeatedly since last October, allegedly by the victim's
own mother and woman's boyfriend. Mark Friend, 25, and
Chrystie Hardy, 23, were booked into the Criminal Justice Center.

Nicholls to stand trial for murder in arson fire
Deborah Nicholls was ordered Thursday to stand trial for murder in
connection with the deaths of her three young children in 2003.
The judge ruled there is enough evidence.
Investigators ruled the house fire as arson. Timothy Nicholls,
Deborah's husband, was convicted in those murders and is
serving three life sentences.

Voyles gets 22 years in stabbing death of son
A local woman who pleaded guilty to 2nd Degree Murder in the death
of her son, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.
It was nearly a year ago that 46-year-old Ila Voyles was arrested for
fatally stabbing 19-year-old Johnny Velasquez during a family
disturbance in the 1400 block of North Corona.

City's newest fire station has grand opening
The Colorado Springs Fire Department is showing off its brand new
station at Airport and Academy. The new Station 8 replaces the
old one at Airport and Chelton.
It's long been the busiest fire station in the city and even ranks as
one of the busiest in the nation.

No brrrrr-eak in the cold expected anytime soon
The deep freeze is expected to stick around for a few more
days in the Pikes Peak region with maybe a slight,
but brief break on Saturday. The wind chills Wednesday
night were well below zero in El Paso County.

Patrolling for "puffers"
With the bitter cold continuing its icy grip on Colorado,
many motorists are again expected to have their vehicles
stolen while letting them warm up unattended.
Law enforcement agencies in the Denver area have come
up with a plan to warn those motorists, before they get

New hospital will replace Penrose Community
Officials at Penrose-St. Francis made it official Wednesday.
Penrose Community Hospital on North Academy will be closing
this summer. A spokeswoman told KZNT it will close when
the new facility at Woodmen and Powers opens in August.

Woman pleads guilty in newborn death case
A woman who prosecutors said gave birth to a baby in a Denver
bathroom, and left it to die, pleaded guilty Wednesday to Child
Abuse Resulting in Death.
Erin Pendleton faces up to 40 years in prison.

Bruce kick prompts investigation
Members of the State House say Doug Bruce's kicking of a
newspaper photographer will be dealt with properly.
It happened during the Monday morning prayer in House chambers.
Bruce kicked a Rocky Mountain News photographer in the knee,
later claiming the photographer was creating a disruption.

Big truck crushes two occupied cars, but police report only
minor injuries
A large moving truck rolled over and crushed two cars about 12:30 Monday afternoon,
but the injuries were very minor. It happened at Pikes Peak and Academy.
Police said thetruck attempted to turn from Academy onto Pikes Peak, and rolled
onto the two cars. Police tell KZNT the truck driver has been identified as 48-year-old
James Karl, who faces numerous charges.
