May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which makes it the perfect time to bring awareness to depression and anxiety. Dads are often seen as the “strong ones”; however, many dads feel anything but strong. Due to stressors, anxiety, grief, or depression, they struggle to get out of bed in the morning. It is more difficult for men to reach out for medical and mental health help due to stigma.

If you are a stressed dad trying to hold it all together, know you are not alone. God is with you, and He will strengthen you. God says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). God is with you; humble yourself under His mighty hand and He will lift you (1 Peter 5:6-7).

1. A Prayer to Rely on the Good Shepherd

1. A Prayer to Rely on the Good Shepherd

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:1-4).

Dear Jesus, my stress is at an all-time high. All I feel is worry, anxiety, and fear. It can be difficult for me to open up to others because I'm expected to be strong regardless of the situation. No one asks me how I'm doing, even though I'm expected to carry the weight of everyone else's stressors. Today, I am choosing to rely on You rather than myself, Jesus.

I don't have to pretend that I have everything together. Instead, I can freely come to You and experience Your comfort, mercy, and grace. You are my Good Shepherd, who leads me beside quiet waters. Bring me to these quiet waters today, Jesus. Help me to see You amidst all the stress. I trust in Your power, might, and love. Amen.

2. A Prayer to Know Weakness Is Strength

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)

Dear Christ, I'm trying to hold it all together, but I'm not sure how much longer I can last. I grow weak and tired of carrying around immense levels of stress. Everyone assumes I have all the answers, but I don't. I need You, Jesus. Please help me see that my weakness is a strength, not a shortcoming. Throughout my life, weakness has been demonized, but I will delight in my weaknesses, in insults, in persecutions, and in difficulties, for when I am weak, then I am strong.

I don't have to carry this heavy burden by myself; You are always there beside me. Encourage my heart to accept Your grace and turn away from trying to manage everything on my own. I cannot manage all the stress in my life on my own, and that is okay. You don't expect me to do everything perfectly; instead, You accept me as I am. Your grace is sufficient for me, for Your power is made perfect in weakness. In Your Name, I pray, Amen.

3. A Prayer to Know You Can Do All Things through Christ

3. A Prayer to Know You Can Do All Things through Christ

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13).

Dear Jesus, the stress I am carrying around today is enough to destroy me. I am weak, weary, and exhausted. Sadly, I cannot talk to anyone about my stress due to the stigma surrounding men. I'm supposed to be strong, prepared, and ready for anything — but I'm not. I need You, Christ. I will cast all my stressors upon You and sit in the presence of Your might.

When I am too weak to stand, I will look to You. I can do all things through You, Jesus. This alone gives me strength. Even when I want to give up, I will keep going. I trust that You will strengthen my feeble knees and ensure my heart keeps beating. You have remarkable plans for me — this present stress will not overcome me. In Your mighty Name, I pray, Amen.

4. A Prayer to Rest at Jesus’ Feet

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

Dear Jesus, it is incredibly difficult to take time to rest at Your feet. I'm expected to always be productive, working on something, or accomplishing a goal. I long to just sit at Your feet and take in Your grace. Whenever I take time to sit with You in prayer, I am questioned or given another task. Please bless me with time to sit at Your feet, listen to You, and study the Bible.

I am taking Your yoke upon me, Lord. Help me to learn from Your gentle and humble heart. This world is relentlessly stressful, but Your love is relentlessly gentle. Thank You for hearing my prayers and covering me in comfort. All glory belongs to You forever, Amen.

5. A Prayer for God’s Indescribable Peace

5. A Prayer for God’s Indescribable Peace

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

Dear God, stressors abound in my life to varying degrees. I am stressed over my job, a new diagnosis, and my struggling marriage. Please help me with these stressors by surrounding me with Your indescribable peace. Through prayer, petition, and thanksgiving, I will present my requests to You. All stress, worry, and fear will pour out of my heart and into Your hands.

I trust that Your peace that surpasses all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Jesus Christ. I don't have to allow stress to dictate my life anymore. Instead, I can surrender them all to You. Thank You for being my lifeline, God. In Jesus’ glorious Name, I pray, Amen.

6. A Prayer to Accept Jesus’ Peace

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

Dear Jesus, Your peace is already circling around me, but I'm overlooking it every day. Please help me to slow down and take in Your peace, such as the singing birds, the gentle rising sun, or the hug from a loved one. Unlike the world, Your peace has no strings attached. Help me to accept Your peace and truly live it out in my daily life.

Although some days will be harder than others, I trust in Your goodness. When stressors creep into my mind, help me to turn to the Bible. Your Word is full of insights that help me turn away from stress and toward peace. I refuse to allow my heart to be troubled anymore. Thank You for everything, Lord. In Your Name, I pray, Amen.

7. A Prayer to Release Stressors to the Lord

7. A Prayer to Release Stressors to the Lord

“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken” (Psalm 55:22).

Dear Jesus, I am holding on to an insurmountable amount of stress today. I have been trying to hold it together for a long time, but I think I'm about to break. Rather than holding on to these stressors, I am releasing them to You. I know that You care about me; therefore, there is no reason to hide my real feelings from You. I'm overly stressed, worried, and fearful; please take these stressors off my plate, Lord.

If you will not take them away, please help me to manage them in a way that glorifies You. Give me the strength to work through these stressors; prevent them from overpowering me. You are my mighty Savior who left Heaven to redeem me. There is nothing that You cannot carry, nor is any stressor too severe for You. Thank You for carrying these stressors for me, Jesus. Your power, might, and grace do not go unnoticed by me. In Your amazing Name, I pray, Amen.
