French butchers are pleading for protection, after they say they are under assault from violent vegans. In a letter to the French Interior Ministry, butchers noted unprecedented incidents that they say amounts to “a form of terrorism.”

The butcher’s federation says its members need protection from militants who have broken windows, thrown fake blood and sprayed graffiti on their shops.

Butchers in different parts of the country have been targeted recently with fake blood by anti-meat or animal-rights groups.

Vandals have shattered windows and left graffiti saying “Stop Speciesism” on butcher shops.

The attacks have taken the butchers by surprise as they tend to be respected community members.

The Vegan Federation said it condemned the attacks.
