Democrats are reeling after a huge upset in New York last week, when long-time Democratic Representative Joe Crowley was defeated by self-described "democratic socialist," Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Responding to the upset today, the chairman of the Democratic National Party, Tom Perez, said socialist political candidates are the "future" of the party.

The Washington Examiner reports Perez told "The Bill Press Show" today that Ocasio-Cortez symbolizes where the party is headed.

Perez also said Ocasio-Cortez and Ben Jealous, a socialist running for governor in Maryland, are examples of "spectacular" candidates the party believes represents its future.
