In men’s college basketball the NCAA Tournament
is set.
The number one seeds are: North Carolina, Kansas, UCLA, and Memphis .

Denver will be hosting some first and second round games Thursday and Saturday.

The Pepsi Center matchups will be Notre Dame (5) vs. George Mason (12), Washington State (4) vs. Winthrop (13), Pitt (4) vs. Oral Roberts (13), and Michigan State (5) vs. Temple (12) .

Nugget set scoring record with 168 point

A record-setting night for the Nuggets who beat the Seattle Supersonics 168-116 in Denver Sunday night.

That’s the most points the Nuggets have ever scored in regulation.

Marcus Camby had a triple-double, Carmelo Anthony scored 26, and Allen Iverson added 24.

No luck for area high schools in state championships

In boys state high school basketball playoff action,

Abraham Lincoln slipped past Widefield 63-59 in the 4A title Saturday night in Boulder.

Colorado Springs Christian School lost 54-42 to Faith Christian in the 3A semifinal game in Fort Collins.

Calhan also lost to Sedgwick County 60-55 in the 2A boys semifinal game.

The Colorado Avalanche moved into sole possession of first place in the Northwest Division with a 5-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers in Denver Thursday night.

72 hours of glory ends for CSU women

At the Mountain West Conference tournament in Las Vegas Friday, the CSU women were blown out by New Mexico 65-41.

The Rams gained national attention this week, after entering the tourney with a 2-27 record,  then winning their first two games.  That included a stunning upset of #13 Utah, which had a 27-3 mark going into postseason play.

AFA, CSU men wrap up season, CU gets upset win

The Air Force men's basketball team was eliminated at the Mountain West Conference Tourney in Las Vegas Thursday.    The Falcons lost to San Diego State 53-49.

The Colorado State men are also done, losing big to BYU 89-62.

At the Big 12 Tournament, the CU men stunned Baylor 91-84 in double overtime.

CSU women pull off giant upset, CSU men snap 17-game losing streak;  Air Force men face Aztecs

The Mountain West Conference basketball tournament continues in Las Vegas.  

The Air Force men take on San Diego State Thursday afternoon at 3:30pm.

Some big surprises Wednesday.

The CSU women stunned #13 Utah 60-52.

The shocking part is that CSU came into the tourney with a 2-27 record and 0-16 in conference play.   Utah was 27-3.

In the men's play-in game Wednesday, Colorado State defeated Wyoming 68-63 to snap a 17-game losing streak.   The Rams advanced to face #1 seed BYU at noon Wednesday.

The Air Force women were eliminated with a 60-47 loss to TCU.

CC Tigers win hockey title, prepare for playoffs

Colorado College clinched the WCHA title last Friday night with a 5-2 win over the DU Pioneers.     CC also defeated DU Saturday night at the World Arena.

The top-seeded Tigers will host the opening round of the WCHA playoffs this weekend.

Champ Bailey's younger brother, Boss Bailey, has joined the team.

The free agent linebacker spent his first five seasons in Detroit.

Green Bay Packers All-Pro quarterback Brett Favre announced his retirement Tuesday after 17 seasons.

The 38-year-old Favre is coming off one of his best seasons, but said he was "mentally tired."

The Pittsburgh Steelers and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on Monday, agreed to a new 8-year, $102 million dollar contract.

Rockies, Hawpe, reportedly have a deal

The Denver Post reports the Rockies and Brad Hawpe have agreed in principle to a
3-year, $17 million dollar deal.

Rockies and Corpas agree on contract

The Rockies and closer Manny Corpas have agreed to terms on a 4-year deal worth $8 million.

It could result in two additional years and a total of over $22 million.

Voice of the Steelers dead at 79

The Pittsburgh Steelers and their fans are mourning the loss of Myron Cope, the Steelers radio announcer for 35 years.    

Cope created the famous yellow and black "Terrible Towels," which fans have been waving during games for years.

Cope died Wednesday in a nursing home at the age of 79.

Former Av Adam Foote returns to Colorado

One day after the Colorado Avalanche announced that Peter Forsberg would be returning, the team said Adam Foote is coming back as well.

The Avs gave up some draft choices to the Columbus Blue Jackets to get Foote.

Ming to miss remainder of season

Houston Rockets all-star center Yao Ming is out for the season with a fracture in his left foot.

Ming hopes to be ready to play for his country in the Beijing Olympics in August.

Forsberg is back

Peter Forsberg is back with the Colorado Avalanche.

The team announced Monday that Forsberg signed a contract for the rest of this season.

Forsberg has struggled with an injury to his foot and ankle.

The Avs skate at Calgary Tuesday night.

Broncos mourn loss of Bob Howsam

The man who co-founded the Denver Broncos has died.

Bob Howsam passed away Tuesday at the age of 89.

Howsam founded the Broncos in 1959.   The team was sold in 1961.

Family members say Howsam had been having heart problems.

Newman takes Daytona 500

Ryan Newman won the 50th Daytona 500 in dramatic fashion Sunday.

Teammate Kurt Busch finished second after giving Newman a big push in the final lap.  

It was the first victory for owner Roger Penske.

Tony Stewart finished third.

The Eastern Conference got past the Western Conference 134-128 at the NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans Sunday night.

Two Denver Nuggets were starters for the West.

Carmelo Anthony had 18, Allen Iverson scored only 7.

Brad Hawpe and the Colorado Rockies have agreed to a one-year contract worth just under $4 million.

The deal avoided salary arbitration.

Sonny day at the State Capitol

Governor Ritter has officially proclaimed February 8th as "Sonny Lubick Day" in Colorado in honor of Colorado State's former football coach.

Ritter honored Lubick during a ceremony at the capitol Friday for his service to the state, the university, and others.

Lubick was fired at the end of the season, but led the Rams to 6 conference titles (outright or shared) and 9 bowl games during his 15 seasons.

Below is the text of the proclamation:

SONNY LUBICK DAY
February 8, 2008 

WHEREAS, Sonny Lubick served passionately as the face, heart, and soul of Colorado State football for a decade and a half, celebrating monumental wins and suffering heartbreaking losses with players and fans alike; and

WHEREAS, during Sonny’s 15 years as head coach of CSU football, the program matured into one of the classiest and well-respected in the nation, and experienced its most glorious period – six conference titles, nine bowl game appearances, and the only four 10-win seasons in school history; and

WHEREAS, the individual achievements of Sonny have also been memorialized – including his recent addition to the list of famous college coaching icons such as Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno, and Frank Beamer as the only Division IA coaches with 100 victories at their institutions; and

WHEREAS, Sonny was hailed as Sports Illustrated’s Coach of the Year in 1994, and voted a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of Distinction Award due to his unparalleled work within the community; and

WHEREAS, Sonny’s efforts while at CSU extended beyond the turf that bears his name within Hughes Stadium, to the players and students of the university to whom he taught valuable life lessons, helped reach career goals, and demanded excellence from as student-athletes; and

WHEREAS, the State of Colorado recognizes Sonny Lubick as one of the elite coaches of our time, an inspiration to his players, and beloved by students, alumni, and fans;

Therefore, I, Bill Ritter, Jr., Governor of the State of Colorado, do hereby proclaim February 8, 2008, SONNY LUBICK DAY, in the State of Colorado.

High school student athletes sign with colleges

Wednesday was National Letter-of-Intent Signing Day for high school student athletes.

The biggest football news in the state was Darrell Scott's decision to attend the University of Colorado.   The running back from Ventura, California has been touted as one of the nation's best.   He picked the Buffs over the University of Texas.

Locally, the University of Northern Colorado and CSU-Pueblo picked up several football players from the Colorado Springs area.

Giant celebration

The world champion New York Giants were honored with a ticker-tape parade Tuesday, followed by a ceremony at City Hall.

Huge crowds turned out to see their heroes.
 
The underdog Giants beat New England 17-14 in the Super Bowl.

It was the Patriots' only loss of the season.

Bobby calls it a Knight

A surprising move in college basketball Monday.   Bobby Knight resigned as coach at Texas Tech.

Assistant Coach Pat Knight, Bob's son, will take over.

Bob Knight is the winningest coach in men's major college basketball with 902 career wins.

It's not exactly clear why he stepped down in midseason.

Giants take Super Bowl in big upset, spoil New England's perfect season

The New York Giants pulled off a hard-fought 17-14 victory over the New England Patriots to win the NFL Championship on Sunday in Glendale, Arizona.

Giants quarterback Eli Manning was named the Super Bowl MVP.

The New York defense sacked Patriots quarterback Tom Brady five times.

With the Patriots losing for the first time all season to finish 18-1, the 1972 Miami Dolphins remain the NFL's only team to ever go undefeated.

Zimmerman in, Gradishar not

It was a long wait, but former Denver Broncos tackle Gary Zimmerman has been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  There will now be two former Broncos in that elite group.    Up until now, only John Elway has made it.

 
Former Broncos standout linebacker Randy Gradishar failed to get enough votes in his final year of eligibility.   In order for Gradishar to get in now, he must be recommended by the senior committee.
 
Also getting elected were Art Monk, Darrell Green, Andre Tippett, Fred Dean, and Emmitt Thomas.
 
The induction ceremony will be held in Canton, Ohio in August.

Sonny decides against working for Rams

Former CSU football coach Sonny Lubick has permanently parted ways with the university, rejecting an offer to become a fundraiser for the Rams.

Lubick, whose name is on the field at the stadium, was fired after a couple of losing seasons despite several conference championships and bowl appearances.

NHL All-Stars score 15 goals, East pulls out win
1/27/08
The Eastern Conference skated past the West 8-7 Sunday night at the NHL All-Star  game in Atlanta.

Marc Savard scored the winner with about 20 seconds remaining.

The East had a 5-1 lead at one point and trailed 7-6 before pulling out the victory.

Nuggets stars Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson were both named as starters for the NBA All-Star Game February 17th in New Orleans.

Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, and Yao Ming will round out the starting lineup for the West.

For the East, the top five will be Jason Kidd, Dwayne Wade, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, and Dwight Howard.

Tulo signs lucrative multi-year deal with Rockies

It became official Wednesday.

Troy Tulowitzki signed a whopper of a deal that will keep the shortstop sensation with the Colorado Rockies for several more years.

Tulo agreed to a 6-year deal worth over $30 million, and it includes a club option for a 7th year.

Tulowitzki admitted the money was a big factor in his decision, but the team's success last year sealed it.   He said, "We really did something special and I'm looking forward to the upcoming years and sharing a lot of great moments.   I think it's going to be something special, and that's why I signed."

The contract will keep Tulo in Denver through at least 2013.

He finished second in the voting for National League Rookie of the Year.

Nene's tumor cancerous

Contrary to a report from last week, the testicular tumor removed from Denver Nuggets forward Nene was malignant.

The Nuggets say the tumor was found early and did not spread.

Nene's website originally said the tumor was benign, but that report was later taken out.

Broncos Lynch to join Bailey in Pro Bowl

The Denver Broncos will have more that one player in the Pro Bowl after all.  

Safety John Lynch will replace injured Colts star Bob Sanders, and make his 9th trip to the game.

Lynch will join Champ Bailey as the only two Broncos on the AFC roster.

Rockies and Holliday agree to terms

The Colorado Rockies and Matt Holliday have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $23 million, 2-year contract.

The team is hoping that will help lead to a much longer deal with the popular slugger.

new head coach.

Sporano leaves his job as assistant with the Dallas Cowboys
 to replace Cam Cameron, who was fired after just one season
